This book has good introductory material for people who have never seen Linux before, but there are a LOT of trivial errors that will frustrate new users and could have been easily eliminated by a good editor. The purpose of the Raspberry Pi is to help young people develop the love of programming that I and a lot of my contemporaries got from Tandy, Apple, Commodore, and Atari computers a few decades ago. That being the case, the programming examples and the information necessary to get the programming environments working should be correct and should give the reader useful information. The pygame information doesn't work as presented, and the C++ section seems to have been hastily adapted from the chapter on C without updating all the file extensions and without clearly showing meaningful differences between the two.The book is clearly written and the writer obviously understands the subject. Careful editing by someone really interested in serving the target audience would have made an enormous difference in the usefulness of this book.

Worked as advertised, not problems. Nice reference.
This ebook works well with -on-PC. It's a nice, nontechnical, introduction to the Raspberry PI. This material discusses why and how the Raspberry PI was developed, and some of it's uses.
This text is a very good introduction to the Raspberry Pi. If you already own a Raspberry Pi, you know that the information online is difficult to wade through, and there is quite a bit of circular references in the online documentation. This text can get you started much more easily than the online marsh.
This book on Raspberry Pi is fine for absolute beginners who have never had any prior experience with Linux. There is plenty of useful information already available on raspberrypi.org website, and particularly on the Wiki and forum. This book is somewhat redundant, but still might be useful for someone with less time and patience to go through the information scattered across different web-pages. Raspberry Pi of course comes without any documentation and this book fills that need adequately for a start. I found two errors that need to be fixed At location 490, the command "pwd" is described as "This tool is used when you need to change your password...". This is incorrect. "pwd" is for "present working directory". To change the password, the command is "passwd" as stated correctly later at location 652. There is a formatting problem (at least when viewed on Fire) from location 1397, at the table of HDMI modes, causing a serious error one cannot proceed beyond this location! I had to jump to the end of the book and go back to the pages just after this offending table. Given these errors the book now seems a bit overpriced.
I've wanted to learn to use Linux for years but have been put off by the cost of setting up a pilot system and deal with the hardware compatibility issues and a strange new OS. The Pi lowers the bar and this book makes getting started in downloading the OS and getting the Pi running. So far I've just loaded the Debian distribution. The book details configuring the Pi as a media center and as a web server. There is enough here to get you started in a variety of ways of using this great little cheap computer.
I came across this while searching for the official "Raspberry Pi User Guide" by Upton & Halfacree [...][1 - not yet released at the time of writing this review).
I figured that at AU$6.20 for the electronic download, I didn't have much to lose. It turns out that it is a great reference for people who are new to Raspberry Pi (like me!), and also new to the whole Linux thing (like me - I dabbled in Linux a couple of years ago, but I am just about a rank beginner). I quickly sorted out a few of my "teething troubles" within minutes of downloading, so it has paid its way already, and more little gems pop up each time I read a bit more.
Highly recommended - especially for RasPi Newbies!
I bought a Raspberry Pi and set it up. But, then what? This book helps fill in the gaps. I'm not very brave when it comes to computers. There are lots of screenshots throughout (they are detailed enough that I use my KIndle for PC app to display them) and the fact that they are sequences of them with each drop-down list is comforting. There is even space devoted to using the programming languages and tools that are pre-loaded. Plus, there are "command-line" entries -- freeing you up from the limitations of the Graphic User Interfaces (desktops). There are even internet links for adsditional tutorial materials. What a great first book for this computer designed FOR learning for programming!
