In this chilling e-original story set in the world of Madeleine Roux's New York Times bestselling novel Asylum, which Publishers Weekly called "a strong YA debut," one teen's descent into the ranks of a secret society leaves him with a secret he'll have to take to his grave.

When Dan and his friends meet Cal in Sanctum—the sequel to Asylum—their impression of the privileged New Hampshire College student is less than stellar. But Cal wasn't always the cold, sarcastic guy he is now. In this digital original story preceding the events of Sanctum, we meet Cal when he is experiencing college like any other kid with a group of close friends and a dad who piles on the pressure. Only, when the pressure starts getting to him and Cal accepts an invitation to meet a selective group of students and alumni known only as the Scarlets, the course of Cal's life changes forever. And the price of joining the Scarlets might be higher than he can pay.

With plenty of twists, turns, and thrills, The Scarlets is an exhilarating installment in the Asylum series that can stand on its own for new readers or provide a missing piece of the puzzle for series fans.

*Warning this contains spoiler for the second book in the duology, Sanctum*

I should state first that I feel like this is a novella that should be read after you read the two books in the duology. The fact that it came out and is listed as #1.5 is deceiving due to the fact that this contains spoilers for the last book, Sanctum. In my opinion I feel like by reading this novella before Sanctum it will ruin some of the events and actions that take place in Sanctum that can destroy some of the mystery and feel. I do not think I would have liked it as if I read The Scarlets before Sanctum.

With all that being said I did enjoy this novella and thought it was a nice addition. I liked the fact that it focused on a different character, Cal and his backstory. I felt like this allowed to see how Cal got to be how he was and explained a little of his personality before the story that happened in Sanctum. I also felt like this novella helped to make a connection with Cal and understand his actions at the end of Sanctum a lot more. This novella was a little creepy, but did not have the same feel the books did. There was a little weirdness and some strange occurrences, but it felt more mystery and suspense than horror.

Overall I thought this was a real enjoyable short story that added greatly to the overall duology. It was intriguing and gave you insight into how Cal came to be how he was in Sanctum and also gave some more background to the overall situation and the Scarlets. I feel like this is a must read if you have read the other two books first, but DO NOT read unless you have read Asylum and Sanctum first!

The Scarlets Asylum Series Book 1 eBook Madeleine Roux Reviews

Short and brief. Things were to slow in the beginning, then like in the last chapter, BOOM, things happened 1-2-3, end of book.
Picked this because my grandkids like spooky stories. Read Asylum, and this gives a great background of one of the character's motivations. I'd like to see if he shows up again in the 2nd and 3rd installments. A quick read. My granddaughter will love this series.
I really liked the characters and the setting. It had me staying up late one night to finish it. It was almost but not quite as good as the first one in the series, which was very good indeed.
It's nice to know Cal wasn't always a jerk but now I want to know more about the girls. I don't know. This book was okay. I read it after the second. It didn't really do much. Maybe lead me to more questions. Hopefully the last book will do justice.
I actually quite enjoyed this little novella. Learning Cal's background was actually more interesting then I expected. I actually like his story line more then the original characters in the series, as weird as that sounds.

Something about this short novella attracts me back to the original series and I am so interested to see where Roux takes the next book. Maybe it was because this one didn't have any disruptive pictures...
I think this book provides an adequate intro to Sanctum. It's not the best written book but it clues the reader into why characters in a Sanctum are the way they are.

The author doesn't show her best with words in this book. There were some descriptions that I felt were awkward. And half of the time she uses the word mobile to describe a cell phone. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the United States a mobile phone is referenced as a cell phone. I always found that weird.
Fun novella after Asylum and Sanctum. The element I like in this book and in Sanctum are the ice pick lobotomies, which were actually done by the infamous Dr. Freeman. The author weaves the storyline together nicely, and you're never left confused. This story explained how Cal became a Scarlet, wrapping up nicely his role in Sanctum. What's interesting in these stories, is that the author doesn't hesitate to throw murder and deceit into the bargain, and I like the chilly undertone to all the books. It just makes for fun reading! If or when this author comes out with more books, I'll definitely be purchasing them.
